More than half of the population in the U.S. have eye problems that require correction, and that number is only increasing in the younger generations. Many things in our lifestyles have caused this increase.

The main culprit being digital screens and their increased use.

  • Over the past few decades the American workplace has changed drastically. Now, for many of us, work means staring at a screen for hours at a time every day, putting tremendous strain on our eyes.
  • CVS is very similar to repetitive strain injury. Constant use of our eyes doing the same things over and over doesn’t allow our eyes to recover and does permanent damage to them that need correction.
  • Studies show that 50-90% of people who work with computers regularly show some signs of CVS.
  • Symptoms include headaches, blurred vision, dry or irritated eyes, and neck or back pain.
  • Kids who use computers or tablets in school are also affected. It’s harder to cater to each child’s needs to maintain a healthy posture while working on computers.
  • CVS is only worsened by not using or using a wrong prescription, so be sure to regularly visit an ophthalmologist or optician to have an up-to-date prescription.
  • Cataracts – Cloud patches in our vision
    • Almost half of U.S. adults over the age of 75 are affected by cataracts.
    • They cause no pain and in mild cases they don’t affect vision significantly.
    • Cataracts can be removed by surgery and eye surgeons routinely perform cataract surgery.
  • Presbyopia
    • A condition that makes focusing on close objects difficult. This condition is a normal part of the aging process that happens very slowly over time, starting around the age of 40.
  • Glaucoma – Primarily a hereditary condition that affects the pressure in your eye.
    • If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to total blindness, so if you have a relative with glaucoma, you’ll need to be especially careful and step up your ophthalmology care.
