Every day our hearts tirelessly work through an incredibly complex system of veins and arteries to provide blood to our vital organs and tissues. If that process were to be blocked, the consequences would be life threatening.

Almost half of all American adults are affected by cardiovascular disease (CVD) and is a leading cause of death. Stroke and heart disease are the two main killers of people over 45 living in New York City, with heart disease being increasingly seen in patients in their 20s and 30s.

There are plenty of ways to prevent CVD. but if it’s too late for prevention, we here at QueensDocs are available for vascular surgery and other treatments all available to you for a large range of circulatory issues.

Because the vascular system and the heart are intrinsically linked, heart failure is overwhelmingly due to artery problems.

For example, coronary artery disease  affects the arteries in the heart and is the most common form of heart disease in the U. S. This disease is caused by a build-up of plaque in the coronary arteries, which blocks blood from delivering vital nutrients and oxygen to the heart, causing angina, and in severe cases, heart attacks or failure.

Another disease similar to coronary artery disease is peripheral artery disease (PAD) as it shares similar causes. PAD typically affects the extremities, such as the arms and legs. Fatty deposits build up on artery walls and restrict blood supply, which increases your chance of a stroke or heart failure.

The treatment for both of these diseases involve lifestyle changes and typically medication. Some more serious cases may require surgical procedures. In less severe cases, patients undergo minimally invasive surgery to widen the artery. However, in more severe cases, invasive bypass surgery may be required.

A stroke is when blood supply is restricted to the brain which is an effect of many cardiovascular diseases.

Carotid artery disease is when the arteries that supply blood to the brain are blocked, causing about 10-20% of all strokes. Along with lifestyle changes and medication, carotid artery surgery is also used to treat the condition, either through a minimally invasive surgery or stent surgery.

Several symptoms relate to PAD, including:

  • Sores on your legs or feet that won’t go away
  • Change of color in your legs
  • Leg numbness or weakness
  • Cramping in legs, feet, or hips
  • Slowed growth of toenails or hair on your legs

However, coronary and carotid artery disease often don’t present any symptoms in their early stages. Most people are only made aware of their condition after they’ve already suffered a stroke or heart attack.

You’re considered at risk for heart disease if you have one or more of the following risk factors :

  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Obesity
  • Tobacco use
  • Family History of CVD
  • Diabetes
